black blues and lamentations

(Poem written 08 Mandulo 2016)

we once knew joy / inhlabanhloso*

We knew imvelaphi yethu

the names of all the Goddesses too

Nomhoyi, Yemaya, Inanna, Ma’at, Nomkhubulwana

we once knew harmony

we said not what we did not know

like the true length of serendipitous seasons

we knew the seeds of destruction before it sailed in with the foaming ocean

Kunene told us / warned us do not hold on to foreign concepts

those things that would not mold us can only hold us

back in the quicksands of fallen times

do not be like the children of Ngoneni the white haired one advised

Manje siyazibuza ukuthi soneni

izwe selibuyela ematsheketsheni

we sing trap songs now

we the children of Hethi Heru the Holy Cow

Thina esasiyinhlansi saphenduka ilangabi

Impela asiyi ndawonye singemanzi

Our joy songs are now spells

of black, crack rock, blues and lamentations

yet something in us assures us that this too shall be overcome
